Eosinophil Portraits: Edition II
Montpellier, France, 7-11 July, 2025
13th Congress of the International Eosinophil Society, Le Corum
An immersive exploration of the hidden beauty of eosinophils and their intricate dialogues
Uncovering the unique eosinophil universe, this exhibition features eosinophil images captured
by electron microscopy and presented at the intersection of science and art. As a portrait, every
image reflects a moment of the eosinophil’s lifetime experience in health or disease and invites
the viewer to engage with and learn from this multifaceted, enigmatic, and beautiful cell.
Eosinophil Portraits: Edition II expands upon the vibrant eosinophil dialogues of Edition I and
welcomes a distinguished guest and close collaborator—the mast cell—another stylish
secretory cell. Both eosinophils and mast cells bring their intricate beauty and complexity,
revealing distinctive visual interpretations.
The Secret Life of the Immune Cells
Juiz de Fora, MG, Brazil, November 2024 to April 2025
Federal Universiy of Juiz de Fora (UFJF), Hélio Fadel Gallery
This exhibition displays micrographs of different immune system cells captured using an electron microscope. The exhibition acts as both an artistic intervention and a form of scientific dissemination, sparking interest in the science behind each image and in the role of this fascinating instrument, the electron microscope, recognized as one of the most important inventions of the 20th century. This exhibition, which had the honor of opening the Hélio Fadel Gallery, a tribute from the UFJF Provost of Culture to the architect who worked extensively in the city of Juiz de Fora and at UFJF, Brazil, brought together a selection from a universe of microscopic photographs obtained over many years of Rossana Melo’s scientific research using electron microscopy.
Art inspired by Science (A Arte Inspirada pela Ciência)
Juiz de Fora, MG, Brazil, 28-31 May, 2025
4th Congress of Neurosciences
1st UFJF Congress of Translational Neuroimmunology
Using images selected from a huge collection of microscopic photographs obtained through scientific research in the field of cell biology and inflammatory diseases, UFJF professor Rossana Melo presents the exhibition “Art Inspired by Science.” This exhibition displays micrographs of immune cells captured while in the blood and diseased tissues under an electron microscope and manually colorized with digital tools. According to the author, in addition to new insights, ideas, and concepts, scientific images also provide emotion and serve to communicate science through art.
Eosinophil Portraits: Edition I
Uncovering the unique eosinophil universe, this exhibition features eosinophil images captured
by electron microscopy and presented at the intersection of science and art. As a portrait, every
image reflects a moment of the eosinophil’s lifetime experience in health or disease and invites
the viewer to engage with and learn from this multifaceted, enigmatic, and beautiful cell. This Exhibition also celebrates the release of the book Eosinophil Ultrastructure – Atlas of Eosinophil Cell Biology and Pathology (Elsevier, 2022) authored by Rossana Melo in collaboration with two Harvard Professors (Ann Dvorak, and Peter Weller, Harvard Medical School). The book has the distinction of being the first entirely focused on the ultrastructure of a specific cell of the immune system – the eosinophil – involved in many allergic and inflammatory human diseases. The book includes an extensive array of electron microscopic images that illustrate and give guidelines to understand human eosinophils in studies focused on cell biology, cellular immunology, pathology, and immune responses to pathogens and inflammation.
